Your Complete Guide to Vertical Form Fill Seal Liquid Fillers

The Key to Running an Efficient and Quality-Controlled Production

Vertical form fill seal liquid fillers, commonly known as VFFS, are used for products that can be dropped, poured, or augered into pouches. These machines form bags around a long hollow conical tube which is called the forming tube. A vertical heat-sealing bar has pull belts to keep the film constantly moving while the area where the film overlaps is sealed. Next, the product will be dispensed into the pouch and the horizontal sealing bar will seal the top of it, simultaneously forming the bottom of the next pouch above.

In this VFFS guide, we will cover
- What is a VFFS liquid filler?
- What industries use a VFFS?
- Features of a VFFS
- Upstream and downstream equipment
- Engineering questions

What is a VFFS liquid filler?

A VFFS liquid filler packages products by vertically forming a pouch, filling it with a pumpable product, and then sealing the pouch. The pouch, or package, is formed from the film being pulled over a forming area, or forming collar, and then sealed vertically. The product is dispensed into the pouch and then cross-sealed to keep the product in and create the individual package. Lastly, once the product is sealed, it is discharged from the machine.

Industries

Some industries that commonly utilize a VFFS liquid filler are,
- Food
- Cosmetics
- Chemical

Features of a VFFS

VFFS liquid fillers come in a variety of kinds and have many different features. Some common ones that we look out for and recommend purchasing a machine with are,
- Squeegee/squeeze rollers
- Types of fillers
- Filling mechanism (2 head, 4 head, etc)
- Film stand
- Web splitter
- Registration eye

Upstream and downstream equipment

When purchasing a new piece of equipment, it’s always important to know where and how it will fit into your production line.

Upstream equipment we recommend for the VFFS are
- Tanks
- Pumps
- Mixers
- Flow through metal detectors

Downstream equipment we recommend for the VFFS are
- Checkweighers
- Metal detectors
- Cartoners
- Case packers
- Case sealers

Manufacturers

Some OEMs that we sell and recommend are as follows,
- Prodo-Pak
- Triangle
- Rovema

Engineering questions

Some important questions to consider when purchasing a VFFS liquid filler are as follows,
- What type of package are you filling? (pillow bag, flat, stand up, die-cut, gusseted pouch, sachet pouch, etc.)
- What are the maximum and minimum fill capacities?
- What is the width and length of the seal bar?
- What is the maximum and minimum package width and length?
- What is the tank or hopper volume?
- Is it print register capable?
- Can the machine code stamp?
- What is the voltage?
- What is the electrical phase?
- How many hertz?
- How many amps?
- Are you running food products? Is it running at a hot or cold temperature?

Summary

A VFFS liquid filler creates packages vertically, fills them with a product, and then seals and dispenses the package. These machines are commonly used in the food, cosmetic and chemical industries and help you maintain an efficient and quality-controlled production line.
