Determining Capacity & Volume

Volume Formulas

Rectangle or Cube Shape
Length X Width X Height

Example: Length is 72", the width is 48", and the height is 60"
72" x 48" x 60" = 207,360 cubic inches

Cylinder Shape
pi X radius squared X Height

Example: Diameter is 48" across so the radius is 24", the height is 72" tall, and pi is 3.1416
3.1416 X 24" squared or 576 X 72" = 130,288 cubic inches

Cone Shape
1/3 X pi X radius squared X Height

Example: Diameter is 48" across so the radius is 24", the height is 72" tall, and pi is 3.1416
1/3 or .3333 X 3.1416 X 24" squared or 576 X 72" = 43,425 cubic inches

Sphere or Circle Shape
4/3 X pi X radius cubed

Example: Diameter is 48" across so the radius is 24", pi is 3.1416, and 4/3 is 1.3333
1.333 X 3.1416 X 24” cubed or 13,824 = 57,761 cubic inches
